History of home from home

Our Home from Home relatives’ accommodation was made possible by the generous support of our fundraisers and we are very grateful to everyone who played their part in making it happen.

This was developed after former Liverpool footballer David Fairclough approached Mr Paul May, former Clinical Director of Neurosurgery, Pain, Anaesthesia and Critical Care, now Non-Executive Director, to ask if he could help organise a charity ball. David had sadly lost his beloved wife Jan to a brain aneurysm and he wanted to do something positive for other patients and families.

So began the Home from Home Appeal, to raise funds for this accommodation so that relatives of patients would not have to snatch sleep in visitors’ chairs in the hospital.

Some of our biggest supporters have been recognised with the naming of rooms and these are their stories.

Fairclough Family Lounge

Expand

This is in tribute to the family who started the fundraising – David, Tom and Sophie Fairclough and their wife and mum, Jan. Jan suffered a brain aneurysm in April 2011, and although many patients survive this condition, sadly Jan did not. David has championed our appeal, helping to organise the Jan Fairclough Ball which is now an annual event. David, Tom and Sophie have brought in many more people to join the campaign to provide a Home from Home and they continue to support us.

Leah Davies Suite

Expand

Leah was the 19 year old twin of Sarah; younger sister to Rachel, big sister to Lydia, Alfie and daughter to Andrew and Mandy. The family launched the Love Leah Appeal in August 2012 after Leah was involved in a fatal road accident. If she had survived, she would have been treated in the hospital’s rehabilitation unit which is why the family chose to support The Walton Centre. They have held countless fundraising events – fairs, roller rink marathons, cycle rides including one from Land’s End to John O’Groats, to mention just a few; and they were the first family to support the appeal.

Joe Mullin Suite

Expand

The family and friends of Joe Mullin have been fundraising in his memory since he died, a passenger in a road crash in October 2005. After initially supporting alternative charities, since 2008 they have made regular equipment donations to The Walton Centre’s Critical Care Unit. When the Home from Home Appeal was launched, the focus of their fundraising efforts was switched to the Appeal, and they have been taking part in our zip slide events and other sponsored challenges; and staging an annual event attended by hundreds of relatives and friends.

Fletchers Solicitors Suite

Expand

In addition to supporting Home from Home events, Rob Fletcher organised a team of 7 cyclists to take on a sponsored challenge to raise money for the appeal.  The team cycled from Calais to Ventoux in France, undertaking an average of 110 miles per day for 6 days.  Fletchers Solicitors covered any costs involved which meant that all sponsorship monies raised by the team, directly benefitted the Home from Home Appeal.
