When Nikki Bennett woke up one morning in June 2024 with a dull headache and a slightly puffy eye, she never imagined these seemingly minor symptoms could signal something so serious. At just 41 years old, Nikki’s world was turned upside down when a CT scan revealed a brain tumour the size of a small orange, measuring 6cm x 5cm.

“I had no idea anything was wrong,” Nikki shared. “The only signs were the little headache in my temple and my eyelid looking a bit different. I was still going to the gym, driving, and living my normal life.”

Within days of her diagnosis, Nikki was rushed to The Walton Centre, where she underwent emergency surgery to remove the tumour. The operation was a delicate and complex procedure, yet thanks to the skill and expertise of The Walton Centre’s neuro-oncology team, the surgery was a success.

“The surgeons told me I couldn’t continue with strenuous activity because a seizure could be fatal. It was a huge shock, but I knew I was in the best hands,” Nikki said. “After the surgery, I felt incredible—like I could cartwheel out of the hospital!”

Nikki began her recovery on Cairns Ward, where she was supported by the expert clinical team. However, just 10 days after returning home, she started experiencing severe headaches again. Acting quickly, the neuro-oncology nursing team at The Walton Centre advised her to return to hospital immediately. Nikki was readmitted and diagnosed with meningitis, requiring intensive care.

“Even during such a difficult time, the care I received was phenomenal,” Nikki recalled. “The team did everything to bring me back to health. I’m so grateful to The Walton Centre for their quick action and dedication.”

Nikki’s journey inspired her to raise awareness of brain tumour symptoms and advocate for improved treatment pathways. Subtle signs like persistent headaches, vision changes, and unexplained fatigue can often go unnoticed, delaying life-saving interventions.

Her husband, Liam, found solace in our charity-funded Home from Home relatives’ accommodation while Nikki underwent treatment. The experience moved him to take action.

“The Walton Centre saved Nikki’s life,” Liam said. “I knew I had to do something to give back. Raising over £5,000 is just the start—I want to make sure every patient has access to the incredible care Nikki received.”
